Irish Trials, February ’16.

Four UCC rowers took part in the Lightweight Irish Rowing Trials, February 2016. Ciarán Higgins and Simon Kearney had a very strong row in the men’s lightweight pair taking second place.

Stephen O’Connor and David Synnott took part in the men’s lightweight sculls with Stephen finishing in 1st and David finishing 5th. Both proceeded into further testing and this led to David moving up to fourth. Stephen and David will go on to trial again in June as part of the LM4x- and LM2x respectively that are being put forward for selection for the U23 World Championships in Rotterdam this August.

Jack Casey will also go forward to trial as part of the heavyweight 4x- for U23 World Champs as well in June.

UCCRC Table Quiz, 8th March ’16.

Thank you to everyone who turned out for our table quiz in The Temple Inn in March! It was a great success, raising over €800 for the club. We really enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with former members and hope to do so again soon, so stay posted!

Irish Intervarsity Championships, NRC, 8/4/16:

UCC’s regatta season opened with a strong showing at the Irish Intervarsity Rowing Championships.

The Men’s Senior Four of David Keohane, Brain Keohane, Andy Harrington and Stephen O’ Connor took first place after a very strong sprint finish which pushed them out to half a length over Trinity.

Deirdre O’ Sullivan and Selma Bouanane took second place behind an experienced Trinity crew in the W Intermediate 2x, with Selma winning the W Intermediate 1x and Deirdre taking 3rd later in the day. The club also took 2nd in the M Inter 2x, Inter 4+ and 3rd in the M Inter 8+.

UCC also took the title of the Men’s Club Four after a very strong race from Tomas Power, Alex O’ Riordan, Stephen Murphy, Neil Mc Swiney and cox Rachel O’ Leary.

Skibbereen Regatta, NRC, 9-10/4/16:

Skibb Regatta saw some very strong and promising results for UCC, with the club winning a total of 7 events and claiming all of the Men’s Inter sweep titles. UCC claimed victory also in the Women’s Inter Pair raced by Clodagh Scannell and Linda Murphy, Club 2 Men’s 8+ and Club Scull won by David Synnott. This was also our novice squads opening race not only of the season, but of their rowing careers! All in all, this was a great start to the season and we hope to see the success continue!
