UCC rowers compete at Irish Open!
It was a busy weekend in the National Rowing Centre as the first Rowing Ireland high performance trails took place. A staggering 108 scullers entered the men’s division one category, the largest turn out in recent times. This field contained the Olympic silver medallists Paul and Gary O’Donovan and many others returning from World Championships and Under 23’s. UCC was represented well in the form of Stephen O’Sullivan, Stephen Murphy, Jack Casey and Ronan Byrne, all under 23 contestants. Top of the pile at the end of Saturday was Paul O’Donovan with the best of UCC coming in the form of a B-Final win from Quercus Scholar Ronan Byrne, which placed him 7th overall. On the sweep side UCC were also represented well with two pairs in the A-Final of the division one men’s category. The two pairs came 4th and 5th in a top quality field.
Sunday was the day for crew boats decided by the athletes themselves. Many composites were seen with UCC entering a Senior 8+ with Shandon Boat Club (SBC), an Under-23 2X again with SBC and an Under-23 4X- with SBC and Clonmel Rowing Club with the latter winning their event by a comfortable 5 seconds.
It was a weekend for UCC rowers to get their foot in the door and their name on the sheet. This weekend represented what will be the first of many for the Irish team selection process in the year ahead. We wish them all the very best.
