Multiple Wins at University Championships and Skibbereen Regatta

7-9th April 2017

One of Ireland’s busiest weekends of racing attracted over 2000 competitors to the National Rowing Centre, Cork for the Irish University Championships and the 2-day Skibbereen Grand League Regatta. 35 UCC Rowing Club athletes competed throughout the weekend and reaped the rewards from the intense training preparation.

Racing began with the University Championships on Friday morning and the first contest of the day saw Stephen O’Connor win the Men’s Senior Single Scull, setting the high standard for his fellow UCCRC team mates.

This was followed up just a few hours later with another two wins in the form of the Men’s Intermediate Double of David Synnott and Fintan McCarthy, and the Women’s Intermediate Four of Fiona O’Keeffe, Katie Nagle, Niamh Casey, Clara Roweham, and cox Rachel O’Leary.

The Men’s Novice Eight showed their considerable improvements from the past few weeks to qualify from their heat with a comfortable performance and battle it out with the best in the final.

3 wins and multiple second and third places meant a hugely successful day for UCCRC.

Skibbereen Regatta brought more wins with the most notable being the Women’s Senior Eight composite with Skibbereen RC dominating Division 1 Eights on Sunday evening, UCC being represented by Aifric Keogh, Aoife Feeley, Fiona O’Keeffe and cox Rachel O’Leary. Trialists Aifric and Aoife took the win in the Women’s Senior Pair the day prior.

The Women’s Four added to their successful Uni Champs results by winning the Club 1 Four, this time with Fiona, Katie, Clara and Rachel being joined by Ellen Desmond who proved her ability having started the sport in September.

Single scullers David Synnott and Julian Larkin won the Men’s Club 1 and Club 2 events respectively making a fruitful three days for the UCC singles.
